Five people required medical attention during the first day of the San Fermín festival, Spanish RTVE reports. Three of them were taken to hospital: one American and two Spaniards.

The public service broadcaster describes Tuesday's bull run in the streets of Pamplona as "lightning fast".

The bulls - weighing between 570 and 610 kilograms - crossed the finish line in two minutes and 16 seconds, which is said to be 20 seconds faster than last year's run.

The running of the bulls in Pamplona has been criticised for years, both because it is dangerous and because the bulls are harmed. Many of the animals are injured during the runs, and the rest are later killed during bullfights.
