A small fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the construction site of the Oxy building on Place De Brouckère. The fire was extinguished, but flames that spread to the elevator shaft caused a new blaze.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene managed to enter one of the elevators, where they found several dead. Six more people are missing and are feared to be in other elevators in the building.
Two people were taken to hospital with burns, while one firefighter was treated at the scene.
The cause of the fire is unclear. The Oxy building is under renovation and will in future house apartments, restaurants and a rooftop bar.
