Voices have been heard from beneath the rubble, but by evening rescue services had only been able to recover two victims.
The campsite has been closed and the search for survivors continues. New Zealand police say fewer than ten people are missing.
The landslide occurred at the foot of Mount Maunganui on New Zealand's North Island. The debris hit Beachside Holiday Park in a town named after the extinct volcano.
There have been several landslides on the island after heavy rains.
