The explosion occurred at around 7pm local time near the historic Red Fort. In addition to the confirmed deaths, at least 24 people were injured, The Times of India reports.
In addition to the car that exploded, at least four other cars were destroyed by the large explosion, which witnesses described as very loud. The cause of the explosion is still unclear.
"A car moving slowly forward stopped at a red light. An explosion occurred inside that car and nearby cars were also destroyed," a police officer, Satish Golcha, told Indian news agency ANI.
According to The Indian Express, both Delhi and Mumbai and the state of Uttar Pradesh have increased their security levels after the explosion.
