Five foreign climbers and two Nepalese guides have died after an avalanche swept through their camp on Monday, according to police.

In addition to the dead, five more people were injured at the base camp of Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal. The accident occurred at an altitude of 4,900 meters above sea level.

The nationalities of the deceased climbers have not been made public.

Yalung Ri, whose highest point measures 5,600 meters above sea level, is considered a mountain well-suited for beginners with no previous experience of climbing at high altitudes.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks, including Mount Everest. Spring is the most popular season for mountain climbing due to the favorable weather.

However, autumn also attracts hundreds of climbers annually, who usually take on the lower mountain peaks in the period between the monsoon rains and winter.
