The agreement is seen as a step towards a long-term end to the war in Iran, and the mediating country, Pakistan, states that the Strait of Hormuz should be opened immediately. Oil shipments through the strait have been stopped by Iran during the war, which has, among other things, pushed up oil prices.

Following the announcement, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index rose 1.7 percent in Thursday trading, while the broader Topix rose 1.4 percent.

South Korea's Kospi was up 0.7 percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, on the other hand, was down 1.7 percent.

Shanghai lost 0.1 percent and Shenzhen gained 0.9 percent.
