To be able to eradicate the disease by 2027, it is required that at least 70 percent of all women born between 1994 and 1997 are vaccinated against the hpv virus, which was not achieved when looking at the entire country. The total vaccination coverage was instead 65 percent.

”It is of course frustrating that we did not reach the goal in the entire country. But what we have succeeded with is nonetheless historic; over 260,000 women have protected themselves and others against cervical cancer, it cannot be exaggerated what incredible significance it will have”, says Ulrika Årehed Kågström, secretary general at the Cancer Foundation, in a press release.

Best in class was region Värmland with 76.9 percent vaccination coverage. The worst vaccination coverage has region Skåne with 55.3 percent.

Despite the fact that Sweden did not reach the goal of 70 percent, the hope is that the disease will be eradicated within a few years.
