Brazil's highest court sentenced seven people on Tuesday to up to 17 years in prison for their role in the failed coup, led by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro himself received his sentence, 27 years in prison, in mid-September for having led the attempt when he lost the election 2022. A further 16 people are expected to receive their verdicts in the coming weeks.

The relationship between Brazil and the USA has since the trial against Bolsonaro become increasingly worse. The President of the USA, Donald Trump, who is allied with Bolsonaro, has previously called the trial against the former president a "witch hunt". Shortly after the announcement of the guilty verdict, Trump was asked by reporters in Washington what he thinks about the matter and replied that he is "very surprised" and displeased.
