Sara Algotsson Ostholt's bid for yet another Olympic Games was hit by a setback at the final selection event.
The eventing rider was forced to withdraw in Luhmühlen.
After a strong initial dressage, the Olympic silver medallist from London 2012 noticed that all was not well with her horse Dynamite Jack.
"We decided to withdraw him from the rest of the competition and are devastated. But Jack's well-being comes first," writes Sara Algotsson Ostholt on her Instagram account.
The Swede, flag bearer in Tokyo three years ago, has achieved strong results on Dynamite Jack during the season.
The pair is one of several competing for places in team captain Fredrik Bergendorff's Olympic squad.
Bergendorff views this weekend's competition in Luhmühlen, Germany, as the final observation event before selecting the Olympic team, reports tidningenridsport.se. However, the results are not entirely decisive for the selection.
After Saturday's cross-country test, Frida Andersén and Box Leo are in the best position ahead of Sunday's final show jumping.
The 8th of July is the final date for submitting the definitive Olympic teams. Eventing is the first of the equestrian disciplines to take place at the Olympic Games, which open on 26th July.
