Ariarne Titmus, Australian, set a new world record in the 200m freestyle. The new record, 1.52,23, was set during the Australian Olympic trials in her home pool in Brisbane.
It's incredible. I'm glad to finally have a race that I feel I'm capable of and to do it in my hometown in front of my home crowd is fantastic, she says.
Going into the competition, her compatriot Mollie O'Callaghan held the world record with a time of 1.52,85. A time she improved on in the same competition (1.52,48) – only to see the even faster Titmus take over the world record.
For the 23-year-old Titmus, this is a strong indication of form ahead of the Olympics in Paris later this summer. Titmus won two Olympic golds in Tokyo in 2021 – including the 200m freestyle.
