The 35-year-old man was brought to shore with severe bite injuries, but shortly afterwards, local police announced that he had died.
The attack occurred while the man was spearfishing with his family off Michaelmas Island, near Albany in southwestern Australia. The shark is believed to be around 4.5 metres long, according to Australia's ABC News.
It is the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia this year, and the third in just four weeks.
On May 24, a 39-year-old spearfisherman was killed by a shark in Queensland. A week earlier, a four-metre great white shark killed a man near Rottnest Island, and in January, a 12-year-old boy died in hospital after being attacked by a bull shark in Sydney.
