Two people have been detained after the accident on highway 83 outside Bollnäs where two young women lost their lives, the police report. The two women who died were traveling in the same car.

The violent collision occurred late on Saturday evening. Two cars collided head-on at high speed. Then a third car drove into the vehicles and one of the cars started burning.

All those involved were taken to hospital after the accident. During the night until Sunday, the police announced that two women in their 20s and 25s had died from their injuries. The others have no life-threatening injuries.

It's an incredibly tragic accident with many difficult circumstances. Exactly how the accident happened will be shown by the investigation, says the police's press spokesperson Magnus Jansson Klarin.

A total of eight people were involved in the accident. The two women who died were traveling in the car with the most people.

Two arrested

Now the drivers of the other two cars have been arrested. It is a woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s who are suspected of gross negligence in traffic, gross bodily harm and gross negligence leading to another's death.

We have heard from some who were involved in the accident, but also other road users who have seen parts of the sequence of events. It has landed on these two suspects, says Magnus Jansson Klarin.

None of the arrested are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Thick fog

On Sunday, the police's investigation of the fatal accident continues. The cars have been seized for a technical examination.

They have also documented the accident site with a drone to get a picture of what it looks like at the site with possible brake marks and other things.

According to the police, there was thick fog at the site.

We have to look at how it affects the course of events, says Magnus Jansson Klarin.

Initiating crisis support

Bollnäs municipality has activated its crisis support and the parish home in the municipality is open to relatives and others who need support after the incident. All those involved were from Hälsingland.

Many have come to the accident site to leave flowers and light a candle on the side of the road.

One doesn't want it to be true, says a young woman to Ljusnan.
