The long run began on Friday in the city of Novi Sad and is expected to last for 18 days. The 20 participants were cheered on by hundreds of people as they set off towards the Croatian city of Osijek, which will be the first stop.

University students have played a major role in the recent Serbian protests against corruption and against President Aleksandar Vucic's government. Vucic formally leads Serbia towards EU membership but has been accused of stifling democratic freedoms and strengthening ties with Russia and China.

Many of those demonstrating are disappointed with the EU's response to Vucic's actions.

Recently, a group of Serbian students cycled to the EU Parliament in French Strasbourg to draw attention to the same issue.
