The protests in the EU candidate country have their origin in the roof collapse at a train station in Novi Sad in November, where 16 people died, and they are directed against corruption and President Aleksandar Vucic's government.

University students have been a driving force in the nationwide protests and they believe that the support from the EU has not been sufficient.

We expect someone to finally react to the situation in Serbia, says mathematics student Ivan Poturica.

The journey for the approximately 80 students goes through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany before they reach France. Along the way, they plan to stay with Serbs living abroad and with other students.
