Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is promising new elections after widespread protests in the country over the past year. On Sunday evening, new violence broke out between demonstrators for and against the president.

A parliamentary election will be held before the current term ends in 2027, Vucic announced, according to Serbian media. According to Vucic, a date will be determined by the relevant authorities.

New violence erupted in the capital Belgrade on Sunday evening after anti-government protesters gathered near the tent camp set up by Vucic supporters near the parliament building.

The opposition accuses Vucic of using the tent camp as a shield against the protests, as the site – now guarded by police – is closed to the city's residents.

Vucic, for his part, claims that the tent camp is a “symbol of freedom” full of “heroes” and that the protesters want to destroy “everything that is progressive and good” about Serbia. He also suggests that the opposition is supported by the United States.

Protests against the government and corruption in the country have been ongoing since November 1 last year, when 16 people died in a roof collapse at a train station in the city of Novi Sad. On the anniversary, large demonstrations were held in support of the victims.
