Despite around 18 parties competing for the 250 seats in parliament, Sunday’s election is seen in practice as a referendum between Aleksandar Vucic’s nationalist ruling party, SNS, and the relatively new opposition movement Student List.

The latest polls suggest the election will be a close contest.

“I expect a very high turnout,” Vucic said as he cast his vote in Belgrade this morning, promising to accept the election results even if he loses.

Student List began as a grassroots student movement against corruption after a roof collapsed in Novi Sad in 2024. The tragedy triggered massive anti-government demonstrations, which eventually led Vucic to call elections in September.
