The next election was supposed to be held in December 2027, but the announcement means that an election could be held as early as October.
President Aleksandar Vucic has previously hinted that an election may be in the offing after the country was rocked by widespread anti-government protests over the past two years.
"I am proposing that the government of Serbia, in accordance with the constitution, dissolve parliament and call new elections," Macut said in an extraordinary government meeting.
