The Vietnamese magnate Truong My Lan is sentenced to life imprisonment for illegally acquiring properties worth billions.
The businesswoman has already been sentenced to death in a previous trial. In April, she was found guilty of embezzling the equivalent of over 130 billion kronor from the state – nearly three percent of Vietnam's total GDP – in a court in Ho Chi Minh City. The verdict has been appealed.
Truong My Lan was arrested in October 2022. The two trials against the 68-year-old real estate magnate are a central part of the Vietnamese government's ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
In March, the former president Vo Van Thuong resigned after also being implicated in the corruption scandal.
