The proposal won by a vote of 50–48, with four Republicans voting with the Democrats.
The vote, which drives a wedge between Republican lawmakers and the White House, comes shortly after the United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war the United States and Israel launched against Iran on February 28.
The initiative, which was given the green light in the House of Representatives earlier in June, cannot be stopped, but Democrats and Republicans have different views on whether it is legally binding or of a more symbolic nature.
