Self-harm involving medication among teenagers has increased by almost 32 percent over the past five years.

In 2025, the Swedish Poison Information Centre received 3,429 inquiries from hospitals about teenage patients. In 2021, the corresponding figure was 2,602, reports Läkemedelsvärlden.

Self-harm is significantly more common among girls than among boys.

Cases requiring hospital treatment have increased. Fortunately, deaths are very rare, although they do occur. But every year there are a number of cases where the patient's condition is very critical, Johanna Nordmark Grass, senior physician and medical director at the Swedish Poison Information Centre, told the newspaper.

The most common medications are paracetamol, ADHD medication and antidepressants.

The picture we get is that it is usually about impulsive actions - you look for what is at home and take what you have access to.
