Since the Ig Nobel Prize was established in 1991, the award ceremony has taken place at prestigious universities such as Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Boston University in Massachusetts.
This year, the ceremony will be moved to Zurich, Switzerland. The move is based on the security situation in the world.
"We cannot in good conscience ask the winners or the journalists covering the event to travel to the United States," said the prize's founder, Marc Abrahams, in a statement.
Ig Nobel is a humorous, research-based counterpart to the real Nobel Prize. The basic criterion is that prize-winning discoveries should first provoke laughter and then reflection.
