Securitas supplied surveillance equipment to notorious Turkish prison where Swedish journalist was detained

Swedish security company Securitas has been selling surveillance equipment to Turkish prisons for several years, according to an investigation by the French-German channel Arte, Sveriges Radio Ekot reports.

Securitas has, among other things, provided surveillance equipment to the notorious high-security Marmara prison, where Swedish journalist Joakim Medin was detained last year.

These are multi-million-dollar contracts with several Turkish prisons where abuses have been documented, according to Arte.

“Respect for human rights is fundamental to Securitas’ operations, and the information provided is taken very seriously,” Securitas writes in a written comment to Ekot.

The company also emphasizes that it complies with laws and regulations, and that it only supplies security systems and is not responsible for their operation.
