Mengele, who became infamous as the “Angel of Death of Auschwitz” for his role in the Holocaust, was never convicted of his crimes. He left Europe under a false name and it is known that he spent a skiing holiday in Switzerland with his son in 1956.
The question is whether he returned to Switzerland even after he became internationally wanted in 1959. There is information that points in that direction, but the Swiss intelligence service has long refused to make its documents in the case available.
After a historian initiated legal proceedings, the Swiss intelligence service changed its mind and has now announced that the documents will be released, reports the BBC.
Josef Mengele died in Brazil in 1979.
