Second wave of major strike awaits Volkswagen

The already heavily pressured car group Volkswagen (VW) is facing a second wave of warning strikes that will be launched at nine factories in Germany on Monday.

"We will now increase our efforts on December 9 and put greater pressure on the company at the negotiating table", says Thorsten Gröger, trade union IG Metall's regional leader and chief negotiator in the state of Niedersachsen, in a statement.

On Monday, nearly 100,000 VW employees went on strike against the downsizing plans, which, in addition to 10 percent wage cuts, propose the closure of several German factories with tens of thousands of employees for the first time.

Then, the workers laid down their tools for two hours, but the next round will see the time doubled to four hours.

The strikes are taking place simultaneously with the next round of negotiations between the union and VW on the savings plans.

The group also includes a range of well-known car brands in addition to Volkswagen, including Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and Seat.
