Rainbow flags were seen among Egyptian and Iranian flags when Seattle staged its so-called "pride match" in connection with the World Cup match, which ended 1–1.

Before the match, the football associations of both countries had strongly protested the pride theme and urged FIFA to stop the celebration.

Inside the stadium, the official pride events were kept low-key, although spectators carried rainbow flags and pride scarves.

Seattle, which was simultaneously celebrating the city's annual Pride Week, used the match to highlight the city's inclusive profile.

In both countries, homosexuality is practically forbidden and in Iran it can lead to the death penalty.
