The sea drone was discovered in the coastal city's civilian port on Friday morning and exploded later that morning, local time, according to Romania's Defense Ministry. It was of "a type used in the war in Ukraine" and was not part of Romania's defense arsenal.
A few hours later, the Ukrainian navy announced that the drone was theirs and that it had been electronically jammed by Russia.
At an early stage, there were suspicions of several drones in the area, and helicopters were sent up to search the port. The area was put on alert and residents were urged to leave their homes.
The incident occurred just days after a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati, injuring two people.
