The Young Swedes' proposal to stop public funding of gender reassignment surgery won congressional support at the SD's national congress.

The SD's youth association Ungsvenskarna believes that gender reassignment surgery should be equated with other cosmetic surgery, such as breast augmentation or facelifts. It would then be the individual's responsibility to pay for the procedures.

"That the public should bear the cost when a completely healthy body is operated on to confirm a perception of identity is unreasonable," writes Ungsvenskarna in their motion.

This therefore won the support of the delegates when the Congress voted late on Friday evening. 91 voted in favor of approving the motion, 77 voted against and 4 abstained.

The party board had not supported the proposal. Among other things, it is emphasized that it is not excluded that there may be cases where surgery is an appropriate treatment method for a patient with gender dysphoria.
