EU Member of Parliament Charlie Weimers (SD) wants to ban employees in the European Parliament from wearing a headscarf.

This is evident in an email that Weimers has sent to other members, according to several media outlets.

In the email, he urges them to sign a petition that demands a ban on "hijab, niqab or other Islamic headscarves for officials employed by EU institutions".

"We believe that the EU's commitment to equal treatment between the sexes weighs heavier than symbols that are often forced upon women in non-democratic societies," he writes.

The plan is for the signatures to be submitted to Speaker Roberta Metsola later in the week.

The initiative has been met with harsh criticism from other members.

Who has told him that all the women who wear a veil in the European Parliament do not wear a veil of their own free will? It was just missing another damn man who will tell women how to dress, says Swedish member Abir Al-Sahlani (C) to Aftonbladet.
