The Sweden Democrats' member of parliament Mattias Karlsson says to SVT that the then SD-owned channel Riks descriptions of the Centre Party's then party leader Annie Lööf was not "a reasonable way to talk about political opponents".

The Sweden Democrats were criticized in 2022 for having made more than 180 clips about Lööf and, among other things, referred to her as "Sharia-Annie" and described her gaze as a "sociopathic gaze".

I do not think it is a reasonable way to talk about political opponents, I do not think so. If I had had any influence over the editorial decisions that day on Riks, I would have thought that we should have done differently, says Karlsson to SVT.

The issue has been highlighted with the resignation of Center Party leader Anna-Karin Hatt due to threats and hate, which was also a contributing factor to Lööf's resignation after the 2022 election.

Karlsson describes social media as a driving force behind the escalated tone in politics.

Anonymity brings out the worst in people and people become self-radicalized by the algorithms, says Karlsson to SVT.

He is the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and is one of the most influential politicians in the Sweden Democrats.
