The exchange of words began when Trump spoke about immigration. He urged members of Congress to stand up if they supported the view that the government's primary mission is to protect American citizens, not illegal immigrants.
When Democrats refused to stand up, Trump said they should be ashamed.
"You should be ashamed!" replied Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat of Somali origin.
"You have killed Americans!" she shouted before leaving the chamber.
"Liars!" shouted Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
Rep. Norma Torres also protested by holding up a sign with pictures of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, who were shot dead by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and federal border agents in Minneapolis in January.
Just minutes into Trump's speech, Rep. Al Green was also escorted out of the chamber after he held up a sign with the message "Black people are not monkeys."
A clip was recently posted on Trump's Truth Social account depicting former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as monkeys in the jungle. The White House blamed the video's publication on an aide, and it was later deleted. Trump has consistently refused to apologize for the image.
An unusually large number of Democrats, around thirty, boycotted the address to the nation.
Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, there was an incorrect description of the shooting death of Alex Pretti.
