“The Westminster era is coming to an end,” the leaders of the three parts of the country declare in a newly signed, “historic” agreement.
Scottish First Minister John Swinney (SNP), Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth (Plaid Cymru) and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill (Sinn Féin) signed the agreement in Cardiff on Monday. In the letter, they call for constitutional changes that lead to increased self-determination, Sky News reports. They also want to return to the EU.
Britain is a centralised country where most power comes from Westminster in London. The move by the three leaders comes after newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham advocated decentralising decision-making.
The SNP advocates an independent Scotland, just as Plaid Cymru wants to see an independent Wales. Sinn Féin wants Northern Ireland to reunite with the rest of Ireland.
This weekend, US President Donald Trump claimed during a visit to Ireland that it would be "fantastic" if the two parts of the green island were united.
It will happen sooner or later, he said then.
