Scotland Likely to Face Sweden in World Cup Playoff After Czech Republic Win

Sweden have one foot in a crucial playoff, with a World Cup place at stake. Scotland will likely be their opponents.

After a failed qualifying campaign, Sweden’s women’s football team must play a playoff to try to reach next year’s World Cup in Brazil. A 5–0 away win over Lithuania in the first match means Sweden is all but assured of reaching the decisive two-legged tie in November/December.

Scotland have put themselves in almost as strong a position to be Sweden’s opponent. They beat the Czech Republic 2–0 away in Pardubice on Friday evening. Star player Caroline Weir opened the scoring in the 57th minute, and striker Claire Emslie added a second eight minutes later.

The Czech Republic also had midfielder Tereza Krejcirikova sent off, leaving her suspended and making an already difficult task even tougher ahead of Tuesday’s return match in Paisley.
