The death was confirmed by the band's management.
"We received a message from his daughter," said Scorpions spokesman Peter Lanz.
Buchholz played in the German hard rock band Scorpions between 1973 and 1992.
Buchholz passed away "peacefully, surrounded by love," the family wrote on Facebook, also thanking the fans:
"We want to thank you for your unwavering loyalty, your love, and the trust you showed him during his incredible journey. You gave him the world, and he gave you his music in return. Although the strings have now fallen silent, his spirit will live on in every note he played and in every life he touched."
