We need a reform of the debt brake in our constitution immediately after the upcoming election, says Scholz.
According to Scholz, more European investments in defense are needed as a response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the dwindling support from the USA regarding the Ukraine war.
Scholz proposes, among other things, that the EU's regulatory framework for public finances should make exceptions for defense investments in EU countries that exceed 2 percent of GDP.
He adds that Germany will not accept foreign attempts to influence the election in Germany next weekend – a clear response to US Vice President JD Vance's accusations on Friday against "European leaders" for not defending democratic values such as "freedom of speech".
Scholz also said that Germany will not accept a "dictated peace" in Ukraine. The expression refers to the conversation between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump earlier this week, where they hinted that talks about a possible peace agreement could be initiated without Ukraine or the EU.
