Scandic Hotels to Charge Separately for Breakfast Starting This Year

The hotel chain Scandic is stopping the practice of including breakfast in the hotel price. Two adult guests can now pay approximately 400 kronor extra per night if they want to have breakfast at Scandic.

Among Nordic hotels, it has long been a practice that breakfast is included in the hotel price, unlike, for example, how it works in the USA or in many other European countries.

Now, however, the Nordic region's largest hotel operator, in terms of the number of hotel nights, is choosing to make a drastic change, reports SVT Uutiset.

The change is intended to come into force at all Scandic hotels during the year.

According to Scandic's communications manager Malin Selander, this will "create more options" for guests and can provide "a lower and more competitive price if you choose to skip breakfast".

Does this mean that Scandic will lower the room prices for their guests by the corresponding cost of breakfast?

Say it like this, if it's a room without breakfast, it will be more competitive than one with breakfast. But the price is dynamic. It can vary depending on the location of the hotel or the time of year, so you can't say it straight out, she says to TT.

How high the actual cost will be for those who want to add breakfast depends on which hotel you have chosen. For example, at Scandic's hotel in Borlänge, breakfast costs 99 kronor per person and night, while someone who wants to stay at one of the hotels in central Stockholm will have to be prepared to pay 225 kronor.

How can it differ so much? The breakfast at your hotels is probably roughly the same?

It can certainly be, but there are different brands in our hotel portfolio. It can be the location of the hotel and demand, there are several things.

Some of the chain's competitors, such as Strawberry and Elite Hotels, have not announced any similar changes.
