Tortorella led Tampa Bay to a Stanley Cup victory in 2004, but has since become best known for his hot temper.
He has threatened journalists with beatings, slashed at both his own players and opponents, and incurred a fine from the NHL of more than $300,000, equivalent to almost 2.8 million kronor.
Vegas had been struggling leading up to this season's NHL playoffs and chose to fire coach Bruce Cassidy. They brought in Tortorella as a replacement.
Tortorella quickly managed to build structure for the team and led Vegas all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to Carolina 4–2 in the series.
Tortorella's contract expired on June 30.
