Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, says the drone was shot down south of the city and that it came from the Houthi movement in Yemen.
The Houthis, for their part, deny that they targeted Mecca, which is Islam's holiest site.
"The claims of targeting Mecca are a worn-out lie that has been used before and no longer fools anyone," writes Hazem al-Assad of the Houthi politburo on X, according to AFP.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), of which Saudi Arabia is a member, reacted strongly to the claims and said in a statement that it "condemns the heinous attacks" against Mecca.
