Saudi Arabia Investigates How Houthi Missiles Bypassed Its Air Defenses, Officials Say

The Houthi movement has repeatedly managed to attack targets in Saudi Arabia, which spends enormous amounts on its military. Officials told the AP on condition of anonymity that an investigation is underway into how missiles have repeatedly bypassed the country’s air defenses in recent weeks.

King Khalid Airport was among the targets in Saudi Arabia, having been hit by missiles several times last week. At least 12 people were killed and 300 injured in the deadliest attack, on Saturday.

According to officials, Saudi air defenses appear to have been initially overwhelmed by drones, opening the way for attacks with various types of missiles. At the same time, it is unclear why warnings were delayed when missiles were fired from Yemen, more than 1,000 kilometers from Riyadh.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement has repeatedly claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi Arabia, which leads a coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
