Just ten kilometers from NATO's eastern border, Russia is building a military base. Satellite images obtained by SVT, in collaboration with DR, NRK and Delfi, show new barracks and weapons depots, among other things.
According to Thomas Nilsson, head of the military intelligence service Must, Russia's plan is to build a base that can house 80,000 soldiers when the war in Ukraine is over.
"We don't believe they exist just for show. It's about being able to face NATO in a larger conflict later on," Thomas Nilsson tells SVT.
Major General Brian Nissen, who leads NATO forces in the Baltics and Poland, says that the military threat is currently low.
But that could change very quickly if there is a ceasefire in Ukraine.
