So far, 15 restaurants on the island have voluntarily joined the pilot project, which aims to get children and parents talking to each other when they eat out.
The initiative, called “At the table without screens,” is led by Anna Cau, Sardinia's children's ombudsman.
"The idea is neither to rely solely on prohibitions nor to place the entire responsibility on parents. The goal is to ensure that our environment supports parents in their role and helps young people socialize with others," she tells The Guardian.
Families visiting the restaurants will be asked to hand in their phones. In exchange, they will receive a gift containing games and drawing materials. The kit is designed to help young people start conversations with their parents.
