Sjöström, almost 33 years old, won her 18th European Championship gold medal of her career in the long-course 50-meter butterfly in Paris - the city where she achieved success with double Olympic gold two years ago.

March 22, 2008: The sensational breakthrough comes out of nowhere. The 14-year-old super talent, who is on Easter break at school, roars to European Championship gold in the 100-meter butterfly in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in her championship debut.
August 9, 2008: Makes her Olympic debut in the Water Cube in Beijing and finishes 27th in the 100-meter butterfly.
July 27, 2009: Sarah Sjöström takes her first World Championship gold when she wins the 100-meter butterfly and breaks world records in both the semifinals and final in Rome.
August 8, 2015: Super-Sarah wins World Championship gold in the 50-meter butterfly in Kazan, Russia. It is her first World Championship gold in a distance other than the 100-meter butterfly.
August 8, 2016: Takes her first Olympic gold when she wins the 100-meter butterfly in world record time in Rio de Janeiro.
July 30, 2017: Wins her first World Championship gold in freestyle swimming when she wins the 50-meter freestyle in Budapest. She also sets a world record in the semifinals.
July 28, 2019: Makes history as the first woman to win five individual medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze) at one World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
August 1, 2021: Takes Olympic silver in the 50-meter freestyle just six months after she broke her elbow when she slipped on an ice patch at home in Stockholm.
July 30, 2023: Passes Olympic champion Michael Phelps and becomes the all-time most-decorated individual World Championships medallist. The gold in the 50-meter freestyle in Fukuoka, Japan, is her 21st individual World Championships medal (12 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze). In February 2024, she won two more World Championship gold medals.
July 31, 2024: Skräll wins Olympic gold in the 100-meter freestyle in Paris after coach Antonio Lutula persuaded her to swim the distance a few days earlier.
August 4, 2024: Completes the Olympic gold double with victory in the 50-meter freestyle, her third gold and sixth Olympic medal of her career.
August 26, 2025: Sarah Sjöström becomes a mother after giving birth to her son Adrian in a dramatic delivery in the ambulance outside Södersjukhuset in Stockholm.
