The traditional event gives professional elves a chance to exchange ideas and experiences, compare beards and discuss wish lists. The programme during the four-day congress is packed with activities such as gingerbread eating, gift wrapping and elf parades.

The most important issue to be decided at the congress is the date of Christmas Eve. Should it be at the end of December, on Epiphany, or some other day of the year?

The World Congress started in 1957 and was held until 2019 at the Dyrehavsbakken amusement park just north of Copenhagen. After a break, partly due to the pandemic, the congress was revived in 2024 with Aalborg as the host city.
