Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and France's President Emmanuel Macron are calling for sanctions to undermine Russia's war machine and increase the economic pressure on Moscow.
In order to hinder Moscow's ability to make money from oil sales, Europe's two largest economies will push for measures targeting "companies from third countries that support Russia's war", they write in a statement.
The hope is also that the measure can get the USA's President Donald Trump to follow through on the threats to expand the sanctions against the Kremlin, in the wake of Russia's attempts to drag out the efforts to get talks about an end to the fighting in Ukraine.
