Pihlström finished ninth in the race with a time of 3.49,70 – and improved the record by just under three seconds. In August last year, Pihlström ran at 3.52,50 in a GP competition in Borås.

I thought I would beat that. It was a good record last year, but to do it in Diamond League is something else. It goes faster, says the 24-year-old to SVT.

The athlete from Hälle set a Swedish record on 1,500 meters at the DL-galan in Rome last week. On Sunday, he will compete in the DL-galan at Stockholm Stadium.

It will be exciting.

Isaac Nader, Portugal, won Thursday's race over an English mile at 3.48,25.
