Food price index has compared the difference between ordinary prices on June 1, 2025 and June 1 last year. Generally, food prices have risen by about four percent in a year. But when it comes to the most common items on the midsummer table, the increase is a bit larger, five percent.

Brewed coffee, Västerbotten cheese, whipped cream and sour cream are products that have become more expensive. Especially dairy products have increased in price, which makes the cost of midsummer food go up a bit. At the same time, it is positive that dairy prices have remained stable over the past few months, since February this year, says Ulf Mazur, CEO and founder of Food Price Index.

Brewed coffee has risen the most of all – 50 percent in a year, he says.

Down for salmon prices

Chicken breast has become cheaper in recent years, and compared to last year, the price has fallen by one percent. Even the price of sliced, cured or smoked salmon has fallen – just over two percent.

Campaign prices for salmon have fallen in recent times. It seems to be a downward pressure on salmon prices, says Mazur.

The herring has become a bit more expensive – up three percent compared to last year. On the other hand, it is harder to predict the prices of strawberries and fresh potatoes. Then it's local pricing and there are no central campaigns, according to Mazur.

More expensive strawberries

The strawberry harvest seems to be a bit late this year due to the cold in May. Now the price per liter is around 70 kronor. Mazur thinks that the price during the midsummer week will be around 100 kronor per liter, as cheap as two liters for 150 kronor. When it comes to fresh potatoes, he doesn't think there will be any campaigns for a krona per kilo, but the lock price will be just under 10 kronor per kilo.

Midsummer is a major food holiday, which is noticeable in the stores. Many lure with campaign prices to get customers to make their purchases just there. It can be up to half the price of some items. But it pays to be multibranded, says Mazur.

Check first: this week, what are the campaign prices? If you have a few stores to choose from, you'll find everything you want on the table.

When it comes to stronger drinks on the midsummer table, spiced aquavit has increased by 0.2 percent in price and light lager by 0.7 percent, according to figures from Systembolaget. This applies to price development between March 1, 2024 and March 1 this year.
