Sahlgrenska University Hospital halved waiting times for surgery in 2025. A patient who previously had to wait up to two years for a hip or knee replacement now waits an average of 90 days.

Those who have been most successful in reducing waiting times for surgery are the orthopedic and gynecological departments.

"During the pandemic, this type of surgery had to be canceled in favor of more urgent or cancer surgeries. Many women have had to wait a very long time," says Pernilla Dahm Kähler, head of gynecology and reproductive medicine, in a press release.

Higher staffing levels, greater surgical capacity and more available beds are major factors. Efforts have also been made to ensure that all patients on the surgery waiting lists are ready when an operating slot is offered.
