An analysis shows that the system did not issue a warning because the vehicles were moving very close together on the runway, according to Jennifer Homendy, chairwoman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The ground vehicle involved in the crash was also not equipped with a transponder that would have helped determine its position, Homendy said.
The ASDE-X system is supplied by Swedish Saab and is installed at 35 major airports in the U.S., including LaGuardia, according to Bloomberg.
