Most things about the long-awaited "Project Hail Mary" film are still secret.
"I wish I could tell you about it. It was such an amazing experience and I feel very lucky to have been a part of it," he tells TT.
Against his will
But from March 20, Ryan Gosling can be seen in the role of an unwilling space pilot in “Project Hail Mary”. He plays Ryland Grace, a teacher who wakes up aboard a spaceship and finds himself traveling into space against his will. He has the knowledge needed to possibly put an end to the mysterious substances that are killing the sun and thus the Earth.
During his journey, he is joined by a creature from another world, which will not be revealed here; suffice to say he names his alien companion Rocky and that he worked with a puppet during filming.
It was surreal. Sometimes it felt like it was real. I had my spacesuit on and was hanging from wires and I was in a tunnel and I saw him and we started communicating. It started to feel like it was really real. A completely unique experience.
Escapism
Gosling has made sci-fi films before and emphasizes the variety of the genre.
There are so many things you can talk about. Andy Weir, who wrote the book "Project Hail Mary", is an optimist. His books are fantastic escapist stories about how we travel to another planet, meet an alien friend and save the world. Ultimately, it is a reminder of what we humans are capable of.
A lone pilot in a spaceship is a theme that often recurs in films like “2001,” “Passengers,” and “The Martian.” Instead of pondering the popularity of the theme himself, Gosling asks for suggestions.
Could it be about the ultimate loneliness, being thrown out of the world we know, being forced to relate to something completely new and from which it is not possible to escape?
He nods.
That's a good answer.
