The trial begins after a seven-year investigation and the indictment is the first of its kind in the UK.
The 65-year-old is accused of one count of aiding and abetting genocide and six counts of aiding and abetting crimes against humanity in Rwanda, prosecutors announced.
He is suspected of having encouraged and incited murder and acts of genocide committed by others, says Frank Ferguson, head of the Special Crimes and Counter-Terrorism Division at the Crown Prosecution Service.
