The EU is imposing sanctions due to the Rwanda-backed M23 guerrilla's advance in eastern Congo-Kinshasa.
This prompts Rwanda to respond by breaking off all diplomatic relations with Belgium and declaring all Belgian diplomats as unwanted in the country.
Belgium counters immediately.
"This is disproportionate and shows that when we disagree with Rwanda, they prefer not to engage in dialogue. Belgium will take similar measures," announces Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot on X.
The EU sanctions are targeting a company and nine individuals, including M23 leader Bertrand Bisimwa and five Rwandans.
